HC Deb 12 February 1969 vol 777 cc334-5W
Mr. Stratton Mills

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what estimate he has made of the loss of revenue on the basis that the starting point for tax was raised by 20 per cent. for, respectively, a single man, a married man without children, a married man with one child under 11 years of age and a married man with two children under 11 years of age, the numbers no longer liable for tax in each case and the saving in the cost of collection.

Mr. Harold Lever

Any such estimates would be unrealistic for it would not be possible to discriminate in favour of men as against women or to confine the increases in allowances for family men to those with no more than two young children.
