Mr. Waddington

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the total sum advanced to the Exchequer during the month of January 1969 by way of the Import Deposits Scheme and Selective Employment Tax payments which will later fall to be refunded.

Mr. Harold Lever

I estimate that the average amount of S.E.T. paid by private sector employers each month and subsequently refunded is currently about £60 million. As regards the Import Deposit Scheme, I would refer the hon. Member to the second part of the reply given to the hon. Member for Leicester, South-West (Mr. Tom Boardman) on 5th February.—[Vol. 777, c. 117.]

Mr. Ridley

Mr. Harold Lever

I estimate that the amount of S.E.T. due to be refunded to private sector employers at the following dates was:

£ million
1st October, 1967 114
1st January, 1968 117
1st April, 1968 115

1st October, 1968 145
1st January, 1969 183

Mr. Sheldon

The administration of the scheme is working smoothly. As to the amounts collected, I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer my hon. Friend the Financial Secretary gave to the hon. Member for Leicester, South-West Mr. Tom Boardman) on 5th February.—[Vol. 777 c. 117.]
