HC Deb 03 February 1969 vol 777 cc41-2W
Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) whether he is aware that whilst Graduate Membership and Associateship of the Royal Institute of Chemistry are accepted by the universities, the Science Research Council and the Civil Service Commissioners, as equivalent to a first or second class honours degree in chemistry, these qualifications are not so recognised by his Department and the Burnham Committee; and if he will now recognise such qualifications as the equivalent of a first or second class honours degree;

(2) upon what criteria qualifications are accepted by his Department for teachers to be placed in group III of the qualified teachers.

Mr. Edward Short

The recognition of qualifications for salary purposes is not for me but for the Burnham Committee. The Committee accepts for the group III scale honours and higher degrees but not professional qualifications.
