HC Deb 03 February 1969 vol 777 cc12-3W
73. Sir Clive Bossom

asked the Minister of Transport why he has ordered an inquiry into the question of the erection of safety barriers on motorways and major trunk roads.

Mr. Marsh

I have not ordered an inquiry. However, as stated in answer to the hon. Member for Warwick and Leamington (Mr. Dudley Smith) on 22nd January, we are now developing criteria to indicate more precisely those lengths of road where barriers might be justified. —[Vol. 776, c.129.]

Mr. Rankin

asked the Minister of Transport whether, in view of recent increases in accidents on motorways, he will now build crash barriers, where they are lacking, on existing motorways.

Mr. Marsh

I do not think that the recent highly publicised motorway accidents provide good reason for altering my general policy on the use of crash barriers. However, I am reviewing the present criteria and this may result in further lengths being authorised.
