asked the Minister of Transport to what extent the Government are planning to give financial help to local authorities for parking schemes in England and Wales; and if he will make a statement.

Under the new scheme of grants towards capital expenditure for public transport, grant of up to 50 per cent. will now be available towards the cost of car parks at railway stations handling substantial volumes of commuter traffic.

Exchequer help towards the revenue expenditure of local authorities on parking schemes is given through the medium of the Rate Support Grants, which meet over half the total revenue expenditure of local authorities in England and Wales.
