asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will publish a table showing the number of civilian employees and their annual cost at headquarters and at outstations separately, on 1st April of each year since 1964.

Although as the hon. Member is aware there have been some adjustments in the numbers of staff classified as headquarters and outstations between 1st April, 1964, and 1st April, 1969, the above table shows that there has been a net reduction of 60,597 in the total number of civilians employed by the Ministry of Defence within this period.

Although as the hon. Member is aware there have been some adjustments in the numbers of staff classified as headquarters and outstations between 1st April, 1964, and 1st April, 1969, the above table shows that there has been a net reduction of 48,806 in the number of military personnel employed by the Ministry of Defence between 1st April, 1964, and 1st April, 1969.
