asked the Minister of Transport how many miles of railway track are electrified at present; and how many additional miles of track will be electrified in 1970.

Mr. Murray

1,986 route miles on British Railways. There are no electrification schemes at present approved or under construction which will come into operation in 1970.

41. Mr. Gwynfor Evans

asked the Minister of Transport how many miles of railway have been electrified in Wales and England, respectively, and at what cost; and what plans he has approved for railway electrification in the future.

There are 1,986 electrified route miles in the British Railways system as a whole, of which all but the Glasgow suburban lines are in England.

Since nationalisation, about £240 million have been spent on electrification in England. There are at present no proposed electrification schemes which have received Ministerial approval.
