HC Deb 09 December 1969 vol 793 c64W
Mr. Wall

asked the Minister of Transport (1) why, in view of the fact that the Elloughton bypass is on the east-west strategy route serving Hull, it is not being built as a special road and motorway to form part of an extension of the M62;

(2) why, in view of the fact that the Elloughton bypass will have to accommodate trunk traffic from both the M62 and the A63, it is being built to a lower standard than the M62;

(3) what effect the lower standard of the Elloughton bypass as compared with the M62 will have on the future expansion of the motorway to Hull as included in the Government's programme of 1946.

Mr. Bob Brown

The design capacity of the eastern extension of the M62 from Ferrybridge has still to be decided. The Elloughton bypass, now under construction, will bring much-needed relief to the trunk road through Elloughton. Together with the existing dual two-lane road from the Hull boundary, it should cater adequately for traffic needs on this section of the A63 for some time to come.

The precise standard of routes selected for the strategic network will be determined later but the essential improvements now being made to the existing A63 will not preclude the eastward extension of the motorway from Gilberdyke should this prove to be justified taking account of the longer-term effect to the Humber Bridge and Humberside developments.
