asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity if she will initiate discussions with employers in the West Midlands, with a view to improving the average wage of women workers in the West Midlands.

I do not think such discussions would be the most useful way of proceeding. The legislation on equal pay which my right hon. Friend will be introducing during this Session will benefit women workers in the West Midlands as well as elsewhere.
