HC Deb 02 December 1969 vol 792 c242W
59. Mr. Brooks

asked the Minister of Transport whether he will publish in the OFFICIAL REPORT the details of railway closures and restriction of services in the Wirral peninsula during the period since the publication of the Beeching Plan; and what plans have been submitted to him for an extension and improvement of such services during the seventies.

Mr. Murray

Rail passenger services have been withdrawn between Birkenhead (Woodside) and Rock Ferry and between Chester (Northgate) and Dee Marsh Junctions. The electrification of the London—Liverpool line during 1966 led to the withdrawal in March, 1967 of the London—Birkenhead and other main line services, which formerly terminated at Birkenhead (Woodside).

The final report of the Merseyside Area Land Use Transportaton Study recommended a scheme to increase the capacity of the cross-Merseyside services, an extension of electrification on the Hooton Line, and a programme of station improvements. It is primarily for the Merseyside Passenger Transport Executive in consultation with the Railways Board to decide what action should be taken on these proposals.
