§ Mr. Carter-Jonesasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) if he will give a general direction to the Post Office Board to make regular checks to ensure that National Savings Bank depositors are frequently reminded of the state of their accounts;
(2) if he will give a general direction to the Post Office Board that it should enable the executors of the estates of deceased people who hold National Savings accounts to be informed.
§ Mr. TaverneThe Director of Savings is now responsible to Treasury Ministers and not to the Post Office Board.
Every National Savings Bank depositor is provided with a bank book as a record of his account and he can establish the exact state of the account at any time by sending his book to the savings bank. The costs of issuing statements in addition would be prohibitive. The savings bank provides facilities to assist legal personal representatives and next of kin to withdraw the savings of deceased depositors but it cannot act until it receives notice of death.
