Russellasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the cost of producing and publishing Command Paper No. 4210, International Sugar Agreement, 1968; what proportion of this cost represents the printing and checking proofs of the Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish text; why these foreign texts were published, in view of the fact that the English text is equally authentic and the Secretary General of the United Nations transmits copies to acceding Governments; and what profits he expects from sales at £1 5s. per copy.
§ Mr. William RodgersThe cost of printing and publishing Cmnd. 4210 was £2,367, of which the foreign language texts accounted for £1,944. It is the practice to publish each treaty in all the languages in which it has been concluded, as questions of interpretation arise which require a comparative study of the texts. A loss of about £500 is expected on copies of this Treaty produced for sale.
