Mr. Mackintosh

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many criminal cases have been heard on appeal in the Appeal Court in the last three years; and how many of these appeals have been successful.

In the last three calendar years 1,884 appeals were heard in the criminal division of the Court of Appeal; 1,094 convictions or sentences were quashed or otherwise varied and 12 retrials ordered. In the same period, 5,078 applications for leave to appeal were refused and 11,220 abandoned.
