Mr. Whitaker

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many nursery schools and places have been provided since October, 1964, compared with an equivalent period prior to October, 1964.

The following table gives the total number of nursery schools in January in the years concerned. Figures for January, 1969 are not yet available; but since the beginning of this year 21 new nursery schools and 139 nursery classes have been approved in the first phase of the Urban Programme. These will provide accommodation for 5,250 full-time pupils.
