Mr. Mapp

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list from information available from the reports of chief constables for the most recent year and for 1964, separately, for the police areas of London, Birmingham. Manchester, Newcastle - upon - Tyne, Cardiff and Oldham the percentage of all detected crime attributable in these areas to children and young persons.

Information in the form requested is not readily available for all the forces concerned. The following table shows, for the years 1964 and 1967, the numbers of persons of all ages found guilty of, or cautioned for, indictable offences; the numbers of juveniles found guilty of, or cautioned for, those offences; and the proportions of juveniles in each case.

In view of the difficulty in deciding what is a serious arrestable offence, the information in the following table relates to indictable and non-indictable offences. The number of offences, as distinct from the number of persons proceeded against or cautioned, cannot be obtained without disproportionate cost.
