HC Deb 14 April 1969 vol 781 cc196-7W
Mr. Farr

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he has yet received the report of the inquiry into the fire at Carlton Hayes Hospital on 11th March; and if he will arrange for the report to be published and for the action he takes as a result of the report to be also published.

Mr. Crossman

The inquiry into the fire at Carlton Hayes Hospital was held on 20th March. The report of this inquiry will be considered on 16th April by the hospital management committee and will subsequently be published in full with details of action proposed locally to implement the recommendations. I shall examine the report to see whether anything going beyond the local action is required.

Mr. Farr

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if, as a result of the fire at Carlton Hayes Hospital on 11th March, he will stipulate that, in future, as far as is possible the furniture in the patients' wards of psychiatric hospitals be constructed of non-inflammable materials; and if he will take steps to assist research and design by manufacturers in this connection.

Mr. Crossman

The degree of fire risk inherent in items used in hospitals is constantly under review, in consultation with other interested Government Departments.
