Mr. Marten

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will circulate in the OFFICIAL REPORT a comparative table showing the number employed at home and overseas in the Foreign Office, Diplomatic Service, Consular Service, Dominions Office and the Colonial Office in the year 1938–39 and the numbers engaged in comparable functions in the years 1968–69.

The 1938–39 figures include the staff of the Department of Overseas Trade under the Foreign Office and Diplomatic Service headings; they exclude the staff overseas of the Indian Civil and Political Services and of Her Majestys Overseas Civil Service. In 1938–39 there was resident representation in 48 independent countries; in 1968–69 there was resident representation in 109 independent countries.
