HC Deb 03 April 1969 vol 781 cc183-4W
Mr. Hooley

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government if he will list in the OFFICIAL REPORT the amount of rate support grant, or equivalent subvention by the central Government, made to Sheffield County Borough in each financial year from 1958–59 to 1968–69, and the estimated sum which will be provided in 1969–70.

Mr. K. Robinson

The latest estimates of the rate support grants for the county borough of Sheffield for 1967–68, 1968–69 and 1969–70, and the amounts of the corresponding grants for the years 1959–60 to 1966–67 are as follows:

£
1959–60 5,495,400
1960–61 5,693,436
1961–62 5,999,421
1962–63 6,385,899
1963–64 6,667,498
1964–65 6,878,316
1965–66 7,841,439
1966–67 8,710,303
1967–68 11,053,232
1968–69 12,001,429
1969–70 13,501,117

Comparable figures are not available for the year 1958–59, which preceded the introduction of the general grant. The county borough was extended with effect from 1st April, 1967, and its population was increased by 9.8 per cent.; the amounts of grants for 1967–68 and the following years are therefore not comparable with those for years prior to 1967–68.
