asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will state the number of alcoholic patients in mental hospitals for each of the years 1955, 1960, 1966, 1967 and 1968 at any convenient date.

Details of patients in hospital at a particular date in these years are not available. The number of patients admitted with a diagnosis of alcoholism or alcoholic psychosis was 732 in 1956 (the earliest year available), 1,091 in 1960, 2,755 in 1966, 2,903 in 1967 and 3,081 in 1968. From 1966 onwards the figures include admissions to psychiatric wards in general hospitals.
