§ 92. Mr. John Wellsasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department by what authority his Department have ruled that Mr. Donnison, of Chart Sutton, Maidstone, is a stateless person although he was born of British parents in British India, served in the Dorset regiment and has held a British passport.
§ Mr. Merlyn ReesThe information in my possession indicates that Mr. Donnison was not born in British India but in a Native State and, while the determination of his nationality is a matter for a court of law, it is not clear that he has a claim to British nationality by descent. I am, however, in consultation with my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, examining whether Mr. Donnison can be enabled to qualify for a British passport; and I shall write to the hon. Member as soon as this examination has been completed.
