HC Deb 31 May 1968 vol 765 c302W
Mr. Crowder

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what action he proposes to take, in view of the numerous attacks on prison officers and police officers with particular regard to the incident in Peterhead Prison on 27th May, 1968; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Ross

I deplore all such attacks. All practicable measures consistent with the duty of training inmates are taken by my Department to protect prison staff from attack. The police also take all practicable precautions. It is worth noting that despite the rise in recent years in the number of persons in custody, there has been no increase in the number of assaults on prison staff in Scotland.
