§ Sir R. Russellasked the Minister of Transport if he will ensure that the roadways of level crossings controlled by half-barriers are made absolutely firm and level with the rails, so as to reduce the danger of the engines of vehicles being stalled by jerking.
§ Mr. MarshOur requirements for automatic half-barrier level crossings lay down that a good surface on the crossing and its immediate approaches is to be maintained.
I am of course concerned to make these crossings as safe as possible, and I look forward to receiving the report of the inquiry under Mr. E. Brian Gibbens, Q.C., who, with his two expert assessors, has been considering the general safety of automatic half-barrier level crossing protection as part of his investigation of the accident at Hixon in January.
