HC Deb 31 May 1968 vol 765 c282W
Sir R. Russell

asked the Minister of Transport if he will ensure that the roadways of level crossings controlled by half-barriers are made absolutely firm and level with the rails, so as to reduce the danger of the engines of vehicles being stalled by jerking.

Mr. Marsh

Our requirements for automatic half-barrier level crossings lay down that a good surface on the crossing and its immediate approaches is to be maintained.

I am of course concerned to make these crossings as safe as possible, and I look forward to receiving the report of the inquiry under Mr. E. Brian Gibbens, Q.C., who, with his two expert assessors, has been considering the general safety of automatic half-barrier level crossing protection as part of his investigation of the accident at Hixon in January.
