HC Deb 14 May 1968 vol 764 c237W
Sir C. Osborne

asked the Prime Minister if he will investigate the representations made to him by Government trainees, mostly ex-Servicemen, that unions such as the Amalgamated Engineering Union, refuse to give them full union membership in breach of the Human Rights Convention, although they are fully qualified, and have satisfactorily done skilled work for years after training.

The Prime Minister

The power of trade unions to refuse to admit people to membership or to any particular class of membership, and the effect that this sometimes has on men trained at Government training centres, is one of the problems being considered by the Royal Commission on Trade Unions and Employers' Associations. The Government will consider any recommendations that the Royal Commission makes on the subject.
