HC Deb 07 March 1968 vol 760 c119W
Mr. Costain

asked the Postmaster-General what criteria are employed in deciding to erect a telephone kiosk; and what is the cost involved.

Mr. Edward Short

The average annual cost of a kiosk is about £300. The prospects of recovering the cost from revenue are taken into account along with the needs of the locality in deciding whether to erect a kiosk. A more liberal view is taken in rural areas and housing estates than elsewhere.

The loss on kiosks in 1966–67 was £4½ millions.
