HC Deb 04 March 1968 vol 760 c12W
Mr. Brian Parkyn

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he will instruct the British representative at the United Nations to take a new initiative to try to get China a seat in the Security Council, but not necessarily in the General Assembly, in view of the danger to peace that exists as long as one of the original five great powers remains outside the deliberations of that Council.

Mr. William Rodgers

We are firmly convinced that the China seat in the United Nations should be occupied by the Chinese People's Republic, but a decision of this importance should be taken in the General Assembly. Only in this way can all members of the United Nations have an opportunity to express their views.
