asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether the Nimrod aircraft will have a function other than that of long-range maritime reconnaissance.

The Nimrod has been designed as a maritime reconnaissance aircraft with an offensive capability against surface and submarine targets. It will also be used for search and rescue. In emergency, it could be used in other rôles.
