HC Deb 04 December 1968 vol 774 cc483-4W
82. Dame Irene Ward

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that there is a shortage of the fluorescent material required to protect children going to school in the dark; and if he will take steps, by legislation or otherwise, to obtain increased production.

Mr. Dell

Fluorescent materials are for use in daylight and are immediately available. There are several types of reflective material which give protection in the dark. Most of these are also readily available. However, the principal manufacturer of the easiest material to use in making arm bands has not been able to meet all demands from stock. I understand that steps have already been taken to obtain additional supplies from Germany and, by air, from the United States. There has been a shortage of capacity for making arm bands, but I understand that the position is improving and that the principal supplier hopes to deal with outstanding orders in the near future. We will continue to watch the position closely.
