Mr. Bessell

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will now make an order to prohibit the importation of dairy farm produce from countries where the producer is subsidised by Government funds if such produce affects prices obtained by the home producer.

Mr. Dell

No. Imports of butter are already subject to quota and my right hon. Friend the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food told the House on 6th November that we were discussing with the countries concerned a scheme of voluntary restraint on exports of cheese to the United Kingdom. 1 he Customs Duties (Dumping and Subsidies) Acts, 1957 and 1968, provide for the imposition of countervailing duties on subsidised imports if the appropriate conditions are fulfilled.—[Vol. 772, c. 106.]
