asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what use of computers is made in his Department.

The Scottish Office Computer Service undertakes a wide range of work for my Departments, and a few other official organisations. Computers have been in use in my Departments since 1960, and their current work includesPayment of Agricultural Grants and Subsidies (e.g. Lime, Fertilisers, Fatstock, Cereals). Refund of Selective Employment Tax to farmers. Payment of Dentists' Fees. Indices of Births, Marriages and Deaths. Experimental Linkage of Medical Records. Processing and analysis of Fishery Research information. Land Commission Betterment Levy. Payroll (Scottish Departments and Land Commission). Compilation of Records of Teachers and National Health Service Employees. Processing and analysis of Statistics on:

  • Agriculture;
  • Fish;
  • Hospital Inpatients;
  • School Health.
  • Scottish Certificate of Education.
  • Records on:
  • Cancer;
  • Mental Health.
Arrangements are now being made for the employment of the Computer Service in connection with:
  • Rent Registration and Assessments;
  • Rate Support Grant;
  • Payment of Teachers' Pensions;
  • Maternity and Housing Records.
Further items of work will be considered as occasion arises.
