asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer why the number of scientific advisers and scientific officers on the staff of the Cabinet Office has been increased from four in 1967–68 to eight in 1968–69, as shown in the Appendix to the Civil Estimates, Class I, Vote 3.

Three of the additional staff are required to enable the Chief Scientific Adviser to the Government to discharge his responsibilities in the fields of science and technology. The fourth post is for a specialist officer to be appointed in the Central Statistical Office.
