HC Deb 08 April 1968 vol 762 c181W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Minister of Labour, in view of the fact that, since December, 1966, the number of unemployed persons in the London Borough of Newham has progressively increased from 1,498 to 1,900 and that industry is leaving the Borough, what action he proposes to take to reduce the level of unemployment there.

Mr. Fernyhough

I am aware of the increase in unemployment in Newham over the period in question. This has been due to a number of factors and not primarily to the movement of industry out of the Borough. My local officers are doing all they can to help those who become unemployed to find suitable work and offer opportunities for training where appropriate.
