HC Deb 08 April 1968 vol 762 cc200-1W
Mr. Onslow

asked the Minister of Transport when first his Department received a request from the Woking Urban District Council to sanction the erection of a pedestrian-operated traffic signal at the pedestrian crossing in Old Woking Road, West Byfleet; and why he refuses to consent to the request.

Mr. Carmichael

Woking Urban District Council first approached the divisional road engineer with this proposal in May, 1966. Following discussions with the Council's engineer the divisional road engineer informed the Council that he would be prepared to consider this site for an X-way push-button controlled crossing, if this type of crossing were authorised for use on a wider scale. The results of the X-way experiment are being evaluated and my right hon. Friend hopes to be able to announce his decision on the future of this type of crossing shortly.
