§ Mr. Joplingasked the Minister of Transport why, in view of his Department's policy that no new trunk road improvement schemes should include lengths of roadway on which overtaking is prohibited, the new stretch of trunk road on the A66 at Crackenthorpe in Westmorland has double white lines on it, implying that overtaking is prohibited.
§ Mr. CarmichaelDouble white lines on this stretch of the A66 road have been put down to keep traffic to its own side of the carriageway where, because of restricted visibility ahead, it would be dangerous for it to stray on to the "wrong" side. The double lines are mainly of the broken and solid line combination permitting overtaking in one direction at a time with short lengths of double solid lines at the changeover points. Even on these short lengths overtaking is permissible if it can be done without crossing or straddling the lines.
