HC Deb 04 April 1968 vol 762 cc131-2W
Sir C. Bossom

asked the Minister of Transport in what circumstances, under the new regulations concerning defective tyres which came into operation on 1st April, a tyre fitted to a motor vehicle is not so inflated as to make it fit for the use to which the motor vehicle is being put; and whether the regulations apply to small differences from the manufacturer's recommended tyre pressures.

Mr. Neil Carmichael

The interpretation of this provision of the new tyre regulations is, of course, ultimately a matter for the courts. I can only repeat that when the Department's staff are checking vehicles they will be looking for tyres so under or over inflated as to be clearly liable to failure or to affect adversely the driver's control of the vehicle.

The regulation is not intended to penalise small variations from the manufacturer's recommended pressures.
