HC Deb 04 April 1968 vol 762 c129W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether the proposal that chief constables in England and Wales are to receive salary increases retrospective to July last year ranging from 4 per cent. to 7 per cent. on salaries between £6,000 per annum to £3,000 per annum is within the Government's prices and incomes policy; and whether other workers for whom he is responsible will be treated on the same basis.

Mr. Taverne

The pay of chief constables is related to that of chief officers in local government; and the increases approved for chief constables follow the recommendations which were made by the National Board for Prices and Incomes on the pay of chief officers and were accepted by the Government. The pay of other services for which my right hon. Friend is responsible are matters for the relevant negotiating bodies, in some cases subject to his approval.
