HC Deb 24 November 1967 vol 754 c450W
Mr. Bryant Godman Irvine

asked the Minister of Labour how many persons were employed by local government authorities at June, 1967.

Mr. Fernyhough

The numbers employed by local authorities and in police forces in Great Britain at June each year are published annually in the Ministry of Labour Gazette. The figure for June, 1967 (which appeared in the October, 1967, issue) was 2,217,000.

The numbers include not only those employees classified to Local Government Service (Minimum List Heading 906 of the Standard Industrial Classification) but also those classified to other industrial sectors, e.g. construction, transport services, education, etc.
