§ Dr. David Owenasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) whether the £200,000 to be spent on the existing Plympton Grammar School was allocated by his Department on the condition that it will be used to establish in conjunction with Plympton Secondary Modern School a two-tier scheme for comprehensive reorganisation;
(2) whether under Section 13(6) of the Education Act, 1944, he will now reconsider whether to continue with the building project for Plympton Grammar School on the grounds that it no longer continues to accord with the original intention formulated when it was first submitted for inclusion in the building programme.
§ Mr. Gordon WalkerWhen the project to extend the Plympton Grammar School was included in the approved building programme for 1967–68, it was on the understanding that the Devon Local Education Authority, which was then responsible for this School, would use it, in conjunction with Plympton Secondary Modern School, to establish a two-tier comprehensive school. Final specifications and plans as required by Section 13(6) of the 1944 Act have not yet been submitted to me by the Plymouth authority which is now responsible for the school. If I find that the authority does not propose to carry out the original intention, I shall of course need to consider the matter further at that stage.
