HC Deb 15 November 1967 vol 754 cc149-50W
Mr. Fortescue

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what re- search is being undertaken under Government auspices into finding a satisfactory cure for foot-and-mouth disease, as distinct from a protective vaccine; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Shirley Williams

Every opportunity is taken to test new substances which might kill or inhibit the foot-and-mouth disease virus without damaging the host cell; but so far nothing has been found which could be the basis of treatment or cure. Research thus remains concentrated on the prevention and diagnosis of the disease.
