HC Deb 15 November 1967 vol 754 c154W
Mr. Bessell

asked the Minister of Power what investigation he has made into the star rating of petroleum spirits, methods of advertising and the accuracy or otherwise of the claims of increased mileage obtainable by use of higher grades.

Mr. Freeson

The Department was associated with the British Standard 4040: Part 1: 1967 "Specification for petrol for motor vehicles" which introduced the star system relating to octane ratings on the 16th March, 1967. This Standard has provided motorists with a more reliable basis of assessment of petrol. My right hon. Friend has made no investigation into the operation of the new standard, but if the hon. Member will provide details of complaints he may have received we will consider them.
