HC Deb 15 November 1967 vol 754 c138W
Mr. J. H. Osborn

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prosecutions have been initiated, and how many have resulted in convictions, for passing on the inside or nearside on motorways to date this year.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

The Highway Code advises drivers to overtake on motorways only on the right and never on the left. There is no specific offence of passing on the left, but to do so may be an element of offences such as dangerous or careless driving. It would involve a disproportionate diversion of manpower to obtain statistics of prosecutions in which evidence was given of passing on the left.
