HC Deb 15 November 1967 vol 754 c118W
Mr. Prior

asked the Minister of Transport (1) whether she is aware of the frustration arising from the failure to provide a new swing-bridge at Lowestoft, and the congestion and loss of time which result from the present situation; and what reply she has sent to a recent letter from the Lowestoft and District Trades Council requesting her to visit the town;

(2) when she now expects the new swing-bridge at Lowestoft to be built; and what are the reasons for the delay.

Mr. Carmichael

We are aware of the need for a new bridge and have published the necessary Orders under the Highways Act, 1959, to enable a bascule bridge to be provided. Objections, which have still to be resolved, are delaying the making of these Orders, and until they are made, I cannot say when the work will start.

I have sent the hon. Member a copy of our reply to the Lowestoft and District Trades Council.
