HC Deb 15 November 1967 vol 754 c137W
111. Mr. William Price

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he is aware of the widespread disregard of the 70 miles per hour speed limit on motorways; and what steps he proposes to take.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

The information before me indicates that this speed limit is being reasonably well observed.

Mr. J. H. Osborn

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many charges have now been made for exceeding the 70 miles per hour speed limit on motorways; and how many of those have resulted in convictions and fines.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

During 1966, there were 706 prosecutions in England and Wales for exceeding the 70 m.p.h. speed limit on motorways. There were 689 convictions; a fine was imposed in each case.

During the first six months of this year there were 517 prosecutions: there were 505 convictions, fines being imposed in all except one.
