Mr. Richard

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will make a statement about progress in the conferment of university status on the former colleges of advanced technology and certain Scottish central institutions as recommended in the Robbins Report.

Of the twelve Colleges of Advanced Technology and Central Institutions for which university status was recommended by the Robbins Report, the following have received Royal Charters as universities in the names shown:—Battersea College of Technology, University of Surrey. Birmingham College of Advanced Technology, University of Aston in Birmingham. Bradford Institute of Technology, University of Bradford. Bristol College of Science and Technology, Bath University of Technology. Brunel College, Brunel University. Heriot-Watt College, Heriot-Watt University. Loughborough College of Technology, Loughborough University of Technology. Northampton College of Advanced Technology, London, City University. Royal College of Advanced Technology, Salford, University of Salford.

The Chelsea College of Science and Technology is receiving university status as a school of the University of London, and I understand that the Welsh College of Advanced Technology has applied for a charter as a constituent college of the University of Wales. The Scottish College of Commerce has merged with the University of Strathclyde.
