HC Deb 04 May 1967 vol 746 cc102-3W
Mr. Hordern

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the total sum spent in the United Kingdom on research and development in the latest complete financial year for which figures are available, in both the public and private sectors.

Mr. Crosland

These figures are collected triennially. The most recent financial year for which a survey was made is 1964–65. Provisional figures for that year were published by the Council for Scientific Policy in their report on Science Policy (Cmnd. 3007). Revised figures are now available. Total expenditure on Research and Development in the United Kingdom in that year amounted to £771.4 million. Of this total, £192.3 million was expenditure in the Government sector, £55.9 million was expenditure by universities, and £523.1 million was expenditure on research carried out by private industry, public corporations, research associations and other organisations.
