HC Deb 04 May 1967 vol 746 cc98-9W
Mr. Judd

asked the Minister of Overseas Development what recent detailed analysis he has made of the development needs of Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland and Mauritius; and what plans he has to increase the amount of aid to these territories.

Mr. Bottomley

A detailed survey of the development needs of Botswana and Lesotho was made by a British economic mission in late 1965, and this was followed last year by full discussions with representatives of the Governments of these countries, as a result of which Britain has made substantial offers of budgetary and development aid to both countries for the three year period 1957–70. I have no plans for increasing these recent commitments. A detailed survey of Swaziland's needs was also made at the end of 1965, and this will be taken into account in assessing future British aid to that country. Mauritius has recently completed a new development programme in whose preparation a senior member of my Ministry's staff played a leading part. Britain has already agreed the development assistance to be provided to Mauritius for the period ending 31st March, 1968.
