HC Deb 09 March 1967 vol 742 cc321-2W
27. Mr. Miscampbell

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the estimated number of disqualified drivers who continue to drive; if he will seek to amend the law so as to facilitate their arrest; and if he will make a statement.

33. Dr. Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department which police forces are by direction of the Chief Constable unable to arrest known offenders who are driving while disqualified; and whether he will introduce legislation to authorise all forces either to arrest such offenders or to stop suspected offenders.

Mr. Taverne

I cannot give any worthwhile estimate of the numbers of persons who drive whilst disqualified. My right hon. Friend is considering with my right hon. Friend the Minister of Transport whether an amendment of the Road Traffic Acts to give the police an unambiguous power of arrest without warrant in these cases is desirable.
