HC Deb 14 February 1967 vol 741 c49W
Mr. James Johnson

asked the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Affairs if he is aware that all the opposition members in Grenada have resigned in protest against the new constitution being implemented before elections are held, this leaving only five of 10 elected members of the Assembly active: and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Hart

Yes. The question of an early general election was fully considered at the Constitutional Conference in London last May and my right hon. Friend the then Colonial Secretary considered that there was no ground for his intervention in the timing of the election. This was a matter for the Chief Minister of the day. The resignations do not change the position. Associated Statehood is not an issue.
