HC Deb 09 February 1967 vol 740 cc350-1W
50. Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what instructions he has given to ensure that prisoners entrusted to his charge do not escape from prison or lawful custody; what are the reasons for the large number of recent escapes; and whether he is satisfied that the measures he has now taken will protect the public from future escapes by dangerous criminals.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

In reply to the first part of the Question, I would refer the right hon. Gentleman to the Written Answer I gave to the Question he asked on 19th January [Vol. 739, c.113]; in reply to the second part, I cannot add to the information in the Mountbatten Report; and in reply to the third part, while it will take time before some of the recommendations in the Mountbatten Report can become effective, all possible measures are being taken meanwhile to prevent the escape of dangerous prisoners.
