HC Deb 02 February 1967 vol 740 cc144-5W
Mr. Fisher

asked the Minister of Overseas Development whether he will state the progress so far made in the field work and geological mapping of the interior of Guyana, which was begun a year ago with the help of his Department.

Mr. Oram

At the request of the Guyana Government, a four-year programme of photogeological interpretation and field mapping of Guyana, south of latitude 4 degrees North and embracing an area of some 20,000 square miles, is being executed under technical assistance arrangements by the Overseas Division of the Institute of Geological Sciences. Since February, 1966, preliminary photogeological maps covering some 7,000 square miles have been produced by the stereoscopic examination of aerial photographs; this is now being followed by four months of field checking.
