HC Deb 21 December 1967 vol 756 c511W
Mrs. Joyce Butler

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food why he has recommended an acceptable daily intake of cyclamate to 50 mg/kg body weight, in view of the fact that it is usual to demand a much increased margin of safety which would make a daily intake of cyclamate to 5 mg/kg body weight more appropriate.

Mr. Hoy:

My right hon. Friend has not made any such recommendation. The figure of 50 mg/kg body weight was included in the report made by the Pharmacology Sub-Committee to the Food Additives and Contaminants Committee. On the basis of this report, the Food Additives and Contaminants Committee recommended that limits—other than those already existing—need not be laid on the use of cyclamates in food.
